Happy with the ending

With a light cool breeze blowing through the air and the hot California sunshine breaching down from above, the drivers in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series put an end to the 2001 season by putting on one of the most exciting races of the year at California Speedway last Saturday.

California has been the season finale for the series for the last several seasons now. It's always a fun track to race on because it's a wide two-mile speedway that requires a driver to be in the throttle for almost the entire length of the track. It's a facility where you're faced with the draft and it allows you the ability to race three- and sometimes four-wide.

Setzer drove the No. 46 to a fourth-place finish at California.

In 2000, I headed to the speedway third in points -- 25 behind leader Greg Biffle. Early on in the event I was involved in an accident not of my making and our championship efforts were ended. My best finish in California is an 11th in 2000, so this year I was looking to put a cap on a successful season with a top-5 or -10 finish.

We were able to qualify the No. 46 Acxiom/Computer Associates Chevrolet in the fourth position, which was our seventh top-five qualifying effort of 2001. During practice we were only good enough for 10th on the speed charts, but as the track heated up, many of the front-running trucks backed up and we stayed about the same.

The race itself was very exciting, with two- and three-wide action. A shakeup early on in the front of the field reduced two of the lead trucks to scrap and two rookies working the draft took the lead of the race. Jon Wood got up there and battled the likes of Jack Sprague and Ted Musgrave for several laps, leading his fair share. The kid was impressive using patience and persistence rather than trying to win the race in the middle of the event.

Our truck was loose at the beginning and we were able to work on it during our stops and tighten it up to where it was very capable of running in the front. By lap 70, we had made our way into second behind leader Rick Crawford and I was able to hold on to the rear deck lid of Crawford, but was unable to make a move for the lead. It was great to get to the front and challenge for the lead.

As the laps clicked down Wood and Musgrave were able to draft past and drop us into fourth. I was able to ride out the remaining laps and capture a strong finish for the Morgan/Dollar Motorsports team. I was excited with a top-five, our eighth of the season. This is how I wanted to end 2001, it helps keep the motivation factor with the guys in the shop strong when you end on such a high note.

It was an exciting race to be a part of as a driver. We were able to draft at high speeds and after struggling some this season on the bigger tracks, it was great for the Morgan/Dollar Motorsports team to get in the front and be able to race with the leaders. Crew chief Danny Gill and the guys have been working extremely hard this season to get our trucks perfect. We have been able to tune our chassis and get them nearly dead on week in and week out. It has been a real pleasure as a driver knowing when you head to the track you're going to have a truck you're able to strap in and drive hard into the corners each and every lap.

This season has been exciting for my first year with Morgan/Dollar Motorsports. We struggled a little bit in the beginning of the season, but were able to overcome that and finish strong. I think we have started to assemble the right pieces towards making a run at the championship in 2002.

Now we head on to the banquet to celebrate our ninth-place finish in the points. The good thing about it is that my team is already back in Oklahoma concentrating on trying to up that ninth-place finish by about eight spots.
