Saturday, September 20 Updated: February 5, 1:54 PM ET Musgrave only third to accomplish feat Associated Press FONTANA, Calif. -- Ted Musgrave matched a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series record Saturday by winning for the third straight time at California Speedway.
Musgrave, driving a Dodge truck for Jim Smith's Ultra Motorsports, outran series leader and pole-starter Brendan Gaughan for his third victory of the season and the 13th of his career.
He did it despite starting from the back of the 36-truck field after having to make an engine change before the race and making several major adjustments to his truck during the 100-lap event.
"My team changed everything,'' Musgrave said. "Our crew just never gives up and they just make the right adjustments.''
Gaughan started from the pole and appeared to have the strongest vehicle, leading three times for 66 laps. But Musgrave erased a lead of about 1.6 seconds after grabbing second place on lap 85, passing Gaughan for the lead with nine laps remaining.
After the race, Gaughan's team found the driver had been slowed near the end of the race by two deflating tires. He hung on to finish second, 2.158-seconds -- about 10 lengths -- behind Musgrave.
Musgrave equaled the record of three wins in a row at the same track set in 1997 and 1998 by Jack Sprague and equaled by Gaughan at Texas Motor Speedway since coming into the series in 2002.
Musgrave's winning speed of 145.926 mph broke the truck series track record of 144.260 and is the second fastest in series history. The race was slowed by only two cautions for a total of eight laps.
Dennis Setzer finished third, followed by Rick Crawford, David Starr, Andy Houston and rookie Carl Edwards.
Travis Kvapil, second in the season standings, finished eighth and slipped to 42 points behind Gaughan with seven races remaining. Third-place Musgrave remained 62 points behind because he and Gaughan, who got a five-point bonus for leading the most laps, came out of the race with the same point total. |
