Saturday, October 18 Wood glad Edwards doesn't wreck him Associated Press MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- Jon Wood held off Roush Racing teammate Carl Edwards to win the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race Saturday at Martinsville Speedway.
It was the second career victory for Wood, who also beat Edwards, a rookie, in a 1-2 finish July 5 at Kansas Speedway.
Dennis Setzer, trying to win for the third straight time on the half-mile Martinsville oval, led 118 of the 200 laps but was bumped aside by Wood on lap 176.
Edwards followed his teammate past Setzer and went after Wood.
Edwards, who started from the pole, had two shots at Wood on restarts in the last 15 laps. He tried to nudge his teammate aside but couldn't get by.
"The thing that was going through my mind during the last caution was that Carl was going to wreck me,'' said Wood, the son of Wood Brothers Racing co-owner Eddie Wood, from nearby Stuart, Va. "We've raced each other so hard and so clean all year, and I figured something is eventually going to happen.
"But it's really good to have a teammate like that, somebody that pushes you to drive to the next level.''
Edwards said it was hard not to bump Wood out of the way.
"I wanted to beat Jon so bad. I did rough him up a bit,'' Edwards said. "I just couldn't let him go. I had to give him a little tap.
"He had the fastest truck, and I knew if I got by him it was only going to be because of a cheap shot.''
Setzer wound up third, followed by Rick Crawford, Bobby Hamilton, Jimmy Spencer and three-time Winston Cup champion Darrell Waltrip, making only his third start of the season.
Series leader Brendan Gaughan finished 12th but saw his margin over Travis Kvapil increase from 30 to 45 points with two races left in the season. Kvapil was derailed by a late crash and finished 16th. |
