Musgrave sets blistering pole pace
SportsTicker

PHOENIX -- Ted Musgrave continued his late-season push for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck series title Wednesday by winning the pole at the Chevy Silverado 150.

A former regular on the Winston Cup circuit, Musgrave established a Truck series qualifying record at Phoenix International Raceway with a lap of 129.427 miles per hour in a Dodge. He eclipsed the mark of 129.204 mph set by Joe Ruttman in 2000.

Musgrave, the runner-up in this race last year, is third in the standings with 3,520 points, 24 behind Travis Kvapil and 69 in back of Brendan Gaughan. This was the fourth pole of the season for Musgrave, who is seeking his fourth win.

Defending race winner Kevin Harvick qualified second in a Chevrolet. His effort to knock Musgrave off the pole came up just short as the Winston Cup star posted a speed of 129.180 mph.

Andy Houston, Musgrave's teammate at Ultra Motorsports, will start third on Friday, with veteran Ken Schrader copmleting the second row in a Chevrolet.

Kvapil qualified eighth in a Chevrolet at 128.297 mph while Gaughan clocked 127.389 mph and will start a season-worst 14th. Gaughan had not qualified outside the top 10 since starting 11th in July at Kansas Speedway.

Dennis Setzer, who is 72 points back in fourth place, also will start ahead of Gaughan after nailing down the 11th spot with a lap of 128.041 mph.

Rick Crawford qualified fifth and David Starr, Bobby Hamilton, rookie Carl Edwards and Jon Wood filling out the top 10.
