Schumacher shatters track record
Reuters

MELBOURNE -- Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher shattered the Albert Park lap record Saturday morning during practice for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

The German showed no side effects from his frightening high-speed crash the previous day, powering his Ferrari around the Melbourne street circuit in one minute 28.134 seconds.

Schumacher, who walked away unscathed after flipping his Ferrari twice on Friday afternoon, sliced almost half a second off the previous lap record of 1:28.134, set by Canadian Jacques Villeneuve in 1997 when the much faster slick tires were still allowed.

He was more than seven-tenths faster than the two McLarens, his greatest rivals for the title. Scot David Coulthard was second quickest while two-time world champion Mika Hakkinen was third, more than a second behind the German.

Schumacher's teammate, Brazilian Rubens Barichello, had to cut short his practice when his Ferrari blew an engine while a number of other drivers made early exits by spinning off.

A second practice session was scheduled on Saturday morning with the official qualifying for Sunday's race to be held mid-afternoon.
