Ferraris struggle in afternoon practice
Associated Press

MELBOURNE, Australia -- David Coulthard waited until the final minute of Saturday morning's practice session to turn in the fastest qualifying time for the Australian Grand Prix.

Coulthard's McLaren toured the 3.27-mile Albert Park street course in 1 minute, 27.540 seconds, just ahead of Formula One champion Michael Schumacher.

Schumacher, uninjured after a double flip in his Ferrari on Friday, had led most of the morning with a time of 1:27.561. But minutes after his fastest lap,. Schumacher slowed down and stopped with a tire or chassis problem on the same turn he crashed Friday. He did not return to the track.

Mika Hakkinen, looking for his fourth consecutive pole in Melbourne, led early in the second practice session but was third in 1:27.775.

Heinz-Harald Frentzen's Jordan Honda was fourth, just ahead of teammate Jarno Trulli.

The top 11 qualifying times Saturday were faster than the Rubens Barrichello's 1:28.962 a day earlier.

There were problems with both Ferraris entering Saturday afternoon's qualifying.

Barrichello was 13th-fastest in practice after an engine failure shortly after leaving the pits and after completing only six laps in the first session.

On Friday, Schumacher lost control after trying to brake too hard for a caution flag. His car slid sideways, hit a patch of gravel and spun into the air, flipping twice before coming to rest near a concrete wall.

Before rescue officials could get to Schumacher, he had lifted his steering wheel from the car and jumped from the cockpit.

Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn said Schumacher's problems Saturday were not related to the crash.

"Michael noticed his left front wheel grating or binding against the car, so he wanted to stop so he didn't do any further damage," Brawn said of Saturday's problems. "We've got to figure out what that was."
