Saturday, March 3 Schumacher blames Villeneuve Reuters MELBOURNE, Australia -- Former Formula One world champion Jacques Villeneuve survived a terrifying high-speed crash during the opening laps of Sunday's Australian Grand Prix. The Canadian amazingly escaped with no more than a sore back after he destroyed his car in a spectacular collision with Ralf Schumacher's Williams in the season-opening race. Villeneuve, who won the world championship in 1997 with Williams, was sent flying into the air after his BAR ran into the back of Schumacher. He flew across the track and into the barriers, somersaulting along the fence until coming to a rest in the gravel. Villeneuve's car was completely destroyed, with all four wheels torn off and debris strewn all over a track. "I didn't know whether to go outside him or inside him," Villeneuve said. "He was in the middle of the track and I wasn't sure which way he would let me overtake him, on the inside or the outside. When I finally went for the outside that's when he hit the brakes. "I had nowhere else to go. I couldn't miss it. My back feels pretty tight." Schumacher also escaped uninjured but his car was wrecked as well. The German blamed Villeneuve for the accident. "It was a mistake by Jacques Villeneuve -- once again," Schumacher said. "I just saw Jacques coming up behind me and heard him crashing into me. I just saw him flying away." |
