BAR finally finds podium
Reuters

BARCELONA, Spain – Team-by-team analysis of Spanish Grand Prix:

Ferrari (Michael Schumacher 1st, Rubens Barrichello Retired) - German Schumacher held first place through the first set of pit stops but lost the lead to Mika Hakkinen on lap 51 after slowing with a problem. He was gifted victory when Hakkinen's clutch failed on the last lap.

Brazilian Barrichello held position at the start and ran in third until he suffered a suspension failure and retired on lap 50.

McLaren (David Coulthard 5th, Mika Hakkinen 9th) - Briton Coulthard was forced to start from the back of the grid after stalling before the installation lap. He climbed up at the start only to hit the Arrows of Enrique Bernoldi and be forced into the pits for a new nosecone, eventually coming back to claim fifth place.

Finn Hakkinen trailed Michael Schumacher until the second set of pit stops when a superior strategy moved him ahead of the Ferrari driver on lap 51. His race ended on the very last lap with a suspected clutch failure and no points.

BMW-Williams (Juan Pablo Montoya 2nd, Ralf Schumacher Retired) - Colombian Montoya made a superb start to move up six places from his 12th position on the grid and eventually claim his first-ever podium finish with second place after Rubens Barrichello and Mika Hakkinen dropped out of the race.

German Schumacher dropped out of fourth place when he locked his rear wheels and went off into the gravel on lap 21.

Benetton (Giancarlo Fisichella 14th, Jenson Button 15th) - Italian Fisichella moved up four places at the start but a clash with Fernando Alonso forced him to pit for a new nosecone and he ended his race in 14th place.

Briton Button started from the back row of the grid after a dismal qualifying and struggled with a shoulder injury to end the race three laps down in 15th place.

British American Racing (Jacques Villeneuve 3rd, Olivier Panis 7th) - Canadian Villeneuve climbed up into the points after starting from seventh and claimed the first points of the season and the first ever podium result for BAR with third place.

Frenchman Panis held position at the start and ran consistently in the mid-field to end his race just out of the points in seventh place.

Jordan (Jarno Trulli 4th, Heinz-Harald Frentzen Retired) - Italian Trulli dropped to fifth behind Juan Pablo Montoya and Jacques Villeneuve after the final pit stops and ended the race just off the podium in fourth place.

German Frentzen failed to get away at the start and was forced off the track and into retirement after a clash with Jaguar's Pedro de la Rosa.

Arrows (Jos Verstappen 12th, Enrique Bernoldi Retired) - Dutchman Verstappen started well, rising five places to move up to 12th, which is where he remained for the rest of the day.

Brazilian Bernoldi was forced to pit at the end of lap one after being hit by David Coulthard at the start and he went out on lap nine with a technical problem.

Sauber (Nick Heidfeld 6th, Kimi Raikkonen 8th) - German Heidfeld climbed two places at the start and ran in the top six before being passed by David Coulthard. He was gifted a point after Mika Hakkinen's retirement on the final lap.

Finn Raikkonen was passed by his team mate at the start and ran at the bottom end of the top 10 to end the day in eighth position.

Jaguar (Eddie Irvine Retired, Pedro de la Rosa Retired) - Northern Irishman Irvine climbed four places at the start and ran as high as sixth before he parked his smoking car by the side of the circuit to retire after completing 47 laps.

Spaniard De la Rosa ran at the rear of the field and went out after colliding with Jordan's Heinz-Harald Frentzen when challenging for position.

European Minardi (Fernando Alonso 13th, Tarso Marques 16th) - Spaniard Alonso ran well in front of his home crowd and after a long battle with the Benetton drivers he beat both to claim 13th place.

Brazilian Marques had a reliable race at the rear of the field, swapping places with the Benetton drivers before eventually losing out and finishing 16th and last.

Prost (Jean Alesi 10th, Luciano Burti 11th) - Frenchman Alesi passed his team mate at the start and headed him throughout the race to finish the day as the last top-10 finisher.

Brazilian Burti ran well on his debut for Prost despite a lack of knowledge of the team and finished one place behind his team mate in 11th place.
