Sunday, July 15 Alonso introduces Minardi three-wheeler Reuters SILVERSTONE, England -- Minardi, the Formula One team that this week publicized a new range of bicycles, unintentionally presented a three-wheeler to the watching world on Sunday. Spaniard Fernando Alonso saw his left front wheel roll off into the gravel trap as he entered a curve shortly before his second scheduled pit stop at the British Grand Prix. The 19-year-old continued on three wheels, bringing the car back to the pits and then resuming the race where he lapped at the same pace as before. "It was quite a big shock," he said after finishing 16th. "Fortunately I was close to the pit lane entrance." Minardi said in a statement it planned to introduce shortly a revised version of its car with a smaller and lighter gearbox as well as a new aerodynamic package. Minardi have scored one point in the last five years and none since 1999. Sauber set new season's best Kimi Raikkonen and Nick Heidfeld took Sauber's Formula One record to new heights at Sunday's British Grand Prix, making 2001 the team's most successful season yet. Raikkonen's fifth place and Heidfeld's sixth lifted Sauber's points tally for the year to 19 points, the most they have ever scored in a single season. The Swiss-based team's previous best performance was 18 points in 1995, when Germany's Heinz-Harald Frentzen was with Austrian Karl Wendlinger and France's Jean-Christophe Bouillon. Sauber, who use Ferrari engines, entered Formula One in 1993, using Mercedes engines in 1994 and Ford in 1995-96. They are currently fourth in the constructors' standings, ahead of Honda-powered Jordan. "This has been a great day for us," commented team owner Peter Sauber in a statement. "In a way our fifth and sixth places against such strong competition are a consolidation of everything we have achieved so far this season." |
