Tuesday, September 11 A look ahead to Monza Reuters MONZA, Italy -- Some Formula One statistics ahead of Sunday's Italian Grand Prix: The title Michael Schumacher and Ferrari have already won both the drivers' and constructors' titles Race wins Michael Schumacher took a record-breaking 52nd career win at the last Belgian Grand Prix. Ferrari has won 143 times in total, McLaren 133 and Williams 106. Schumacher has finished first or second in 18 of the past 20 races and has eight wins so far in 2001. The last race without a Ferrari or McLaren driver on the podium was the September 1999 European Grand Prix at the Nuerburgring, won by the Stewart of Briton Johnny Herbert. Pole Schumacher has been on the pole 41 times in his career, more than any other current driver but still well short of the late Brazilian Ayrton Senna's record 65. The Ferrari driver has also been on the pole nine times in 14 races this season. Two drivers have scored the first poles of their careers this season -- Ralf Schumacher in France and his Williams teammate Juan Pablo Montoya at Hockenheim and Spa. David Coulthard has 12 career poles, McLaren teammate Mika Hakkinen 26. Ferrari has had 146 poles since their first ever race, McLaren 112 and Williams 111. Italy Monza has hosted the Italian Grand Prix every year since 1950, with the exception of 1980 when it was at Imola. It is the most used track in Formula One history. Ferrari has won 13 times at Monza, six of them one-two finishes. Their last one-two was Schumacher leading home Eddie Irvine in 1998. McLaren has never had a one-two finish at Monza and Williams just once, in 1986. Schumacher has won three times at Monza, twice from pole. Germany's Heinz-Harald Frentzen triumphed in 1999, the last time Jordan won a grand prix. Jordan's French veteran Jean Alesi has only ever been on the pole at Monza, in 1994 and 1997. He has never won the race but has finished runner-up three times. The Italian Grand Prix is one race that McLaren's Hakkinen has never won despite nine attempts. Points Michael Schumacher has scored 782 points in his career, although that tally includes 78 that were wiped from his record in 1997 as punishment for a maneuver against Jacques Villeneuve at Jerez that year. Prost holds the record of 798.5. Scoring systems have changed over the years and there are now more races than there were in the early days. Six of the 11 teams have yet to win a race in their Formula One history -- BAR, Arrows, Sauber, Jaguar, Prost and Minardi. Minardi are the only team never to have reached the podium. Starts Arrows holds the record of 368 starts without a win. |
