Saturday, September 15 Montoya grabs third pole of year Associated Press
Montoya, a former CART champion in his first season in Formula One, captured his third pole of the year Saturday. Riding a Williams-BMW, the Colombian edged Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello by 0.31 seconds. On Sunday, Barrichello will be in the front row for the third time this year. Montoya had the fastest lap of 1 minute, 22.216 seconds, setting a record average speed at the Monza circuit, the fastest championship track. Schumacher, who has already clinched the championship, came in third, 0.4 behind Montoya. He will be joined on the second row with younger brother Ralf, who had the fourth-best qualifying time in a second Williams-BMW. For the second day at Monza, Michael Schumacher drove a Ferrari car without commercial labels and with a black nose out of respect for the victims of terrorist attacks in the United States. Jarno Trulli, in a Jordan, was fifth, followed by David Coulthard, driving a McLaren Mercedes. The one-hour session was suspended in the closing minutes after Mika Hakkinen crashed but was not hurt. He lifted himself from the cockpit and was applauded by fans as he arrived at the pits. The Finnish driver, a two-time world champion who will take a break after this season, spun and crashed his McLaren at high speed against the guardrails. The car lost the front left wheel, with the front part badly damaged. After a 12-minute delay, qualifying resumed but nobody could improve previous times. |
