INDIANAPOLIS -- Jaques Villeneuve has branded his BAR Formula One car as "sick" and "undriveable."

The Canadian former world champion's return to Indianapolis, the scene of one of the greatest moments of his career when he won the Indy 500, was rewarded with his worst qualifying performance of the year.

Villeneuve struggled in free practice for the U.S. Grand Prix and then qualified 18th, behind the Minardi of Spaniard Fernando Alonso.

"The car was sick all weekend and we didn't cure it," said the British American Racing driver.

"It doesn't really have any grip and we weren't too quick on the straights at the same time. It was just undriveable.

"That was close to as fast as the car would go for me, so I don't know what was wrong. We couldn't pinpoint it."

His French team mate Olivier Panis was 13th fastest but both BARs were still well behind the pace of their Honda-powered rivals Jordan.
