Driver penalized for leaving pits early
Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS -- Mika Hakkinen, second-fastest in qualifications, was penalized two starting positions for improperly leaving pit lane during the final practice before the U.S. Grand Prix on Sunday.

The infraction for leaving the pits while the exit lights were still red cost Hakkinen his fastest qualifying time from the day before.

Instead, his starting spot was determined by his second-fastest lap, putting him behind Michael Schumacher, Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya in the 22-car lineup.

Hakkinen, a two-time Formula One champion who will take at least a year off racing after the season-ending race in Japan on Oct. 14, drives for the McLaren team.
