As a result, Trulli ends the race non-classified, which means he receives no points and does not earn a finish in the official results.

According to the FIA Formula One technical delegate, the thickness around the rear hole of the skid block -- which is attached to the bottom of the race car -- was measured at 7.5 millimeters - 1.5 millimeters below the minimum required.

The high wear is "very likely to be caused by the loss of two fasteners which are normally flush with the surface of the skid block," the delegate said. "These fasteners are designed to prevent such high wear."

With Trulli's finish excluded, Eddie Irvine of Ireland was credited with a fourth-place finish for Jaguar. Nick Heidfeld of Germany moves up a spot to fifth place, with Jean Alesi of France -- starting his 200th Formula One race -- boosted to sixth.

Trulli and Alesi both race for B&H Jordan Racing, which has the right to appeal the penalty.

The Jordan team, which would have gone to fifth in the championship standings, announced that they would appeal against the decision.

It was not known when a final decision would be announced. The race results remain provisional pending the appeal.
