Tuesday, December 18 User comments on Coulthard Here's what users had to say about McLaren's David Coulthard, his past season and his future prospects:
David Coulthard will have to improve his overtaking ability if he hopes to make a run at Michael Schumacher. His inability to overtake a back-marking Arrows at Monaco (an admittedly difficult track at which to pass) demonstrates this. Someone will beat Schumacher in 2002, but it won't be Coulthard. Gary Miller Denver
Now with Mika Hakkinen gone, maybe McLaren will concentrate on helping David Coulthard earn his first, and well deserved, championship. He has done everything the team has asked, even allowed them to pit him late during critical moments in several races, just to bolster Hakkinen's position. Now the team owes him big, and giving him a car that is worthy of the championship is a good start. They then also need to back him with team orders that allow him to take advantage of their strengths that they have so long given his teammate. Delbert Reeves Cedar City, Utah.
David Coulthard is about to face his most embarrasing season yet when it comes to 2002. He's always stated that next year was going to be "his year," but now he'll have to contend with Kimi Raikkonen solidly kicking his Scot arse event after event. My prediction: DC will be so shamed by Kimi, that he will be dumped by McLaren and lucky to get a job as a cab "driver." His F1 carrer is certainly over. Mark Moore Dallas
McLaren can win in 2002 if they correct the mistakes they made as a team in the 2001 season. The errors in 2001 were devastating in a race for the title. Julien Brown Ewing, N.J.
If anyone can beat Ferrari, David Coulthard is the man to do it. But Michael Schumaker and Ferrari are nearly unbeatable at this time. Erwin Register Allendale, Mich.
David Coulthard needs to learn from his old teammate, Mika Hakkinen, and let his driving do the talking for him. He talks to much of future championships and why things aren't his fault when he doesn't win. Just drive and (team boss) Ron Dennis will take care of you, David. If you don't, there will be two Finns at McLaren in 2003. Michael Dublin, Ohio.
David Coulthard can't hope to beat Michael Schumacher when he won't even be the best driver in his team. He only was able to beat a less-than-motivated Mika Hakkinen this year, and in previous years he was outclassed by Mika. Kimi Raikkonen shall do the same. Victor Broccoli Clark, N.J.
I think David Coulthard has peaked. He's with the best team in F1, and he has struggled to win races while his teammate has collected championships. I'd say he's got about one year before Kimi Raikkonen becomes fully entrenched as the team's No. 1 driver. If only he hadn't let Mika Hakkinen by in Austrailia in 1997. Paul Fogel Kansas City, Mo.
David Coulthard simply lacks the edge any true F1 champion needs. If not, he would have won the title in '99, and last year he wouldn't have finished with barely more than half of Michael Schumacher's final tally. Expect more of the same in '02 from DC. Mark Hawking San Diego
David Coulthard appears to be a focused man capable of running with the best. With the "Mika factor" removed from the scene, David will be No. 1 with the team. I predict this year to be his best shot ever at winning the title. Michael McDermott Corte Madera, Calif. |
