User comments on Pedro de la Rosa

Here's what users had to say about Jaguar's Pedro de la Rosa, his past season and his future prospects:

While Pedro de la Rosa is no challenger to the elite drivers in Formula One for 2002, he'll certianly outqualify and run faster than his teammate, Eddie Irvine. Irvine has demonstrated that he's lost without the setup guidance of a master teammate like Michael Schumacher.

Quite frankly, neither team nor driver are up to snuff. A fifth-place is his high-water mark? Wow. Even J.J. Lehto in a BMS Dallara-Judd got on the podium once in his life in Formula One. Jaguar will still be uncompetitive and Niki Lauda will still prove himself to just be a tremendous pain to everyone involved. Perhaps someday Pedro de la Rosa will end up a backmarker in CART, that is if CART still exists in a few years.

If this year's car is better, I think Pedro de la Rosa will definitely score more points. He had some good runs in the R2, which wasn't a "great" car, so if the R3 is more competitive, I think he'll have better results.

While I agree that Jaguar's performance will be based on Eddie Irvine's performance, I believe Tom Walkinshaw made a mistake in letting this talented driver go. Pedro de la Rosa and Irvine raced together 12 times last season and qualifying was split equally. However, de la Rosa did out qualify Irvine five times consecutively, starting with the British Grand Prix and ending with the Italian Grand Prix. Beating his very experienced teammate to the line at power tracks such as Spa, Monza and Hockenheim proves his worth.

Pedro de la Rosa is a talented driver wothy of a Formula One ride, but will never be more than "middle of the pack" material. I believe he's with the right team, driving a car he deserves and will probably do better than last year, but not much better. I predict six points for the Spaniard, which should be about the same as his arrogant, overrated teammate, Eddie Irvine, will score.
