Put the pedal to the metal in ESPN's Fantasy Racing 2002. Get your teams today! |
Thursday, January 24 Users: Salo has tough road ahead ESPN.com Here's what users had to say about Toyota's Mika Salo and his future prospects:
Mika Salo has a lot working against him this year at Toyota. He is not getting any younger, and has yet to prove that he can carry a team. It is ironic that he has an ego the size of Finland. Where the other Mika (Hakkinen) is known for his precision, this Mika is known for his crashes. Toyota would be much better suited with Heinz-Harald Frentzen leading the way. Who knows? We may see that by year's end. Jerry Olcsvary Princeton, N.J.
They should be trying to finish every race, because that is the way to score those one and two points per race. Finishing will be the key for the new guys -- and some old guys, like Minardi and Renault. Robert Chatman Cupertino, Calif.
Salo should focus solely on bringing the car home every race. Although Toyota is bound to have numerous mechanical problems, there are always races of attrition throughout the year, and if Salo can keep it together, he should collect a couple decent top-10 finishes. Basically though, expect a year 'round battle between Toyota and Minardi for F1 backmarker supremacy. I can't wait. Patrick Heber East Lansing, Mich.
Mika Salo has always been an under-rated and unappreciated driver. In hindsight, it would have been wonderful to see him keep his foot on the gas and leave Eddie Irvine in the dust at Hockenheim in '99. Unfortunately, his half-season with Ferrari may have been the high point. Toyota will no doubt languish for a couple of years and with its deep pockets, will probably opt for a young superstar like Massa once Salo hones the car to a razors edge. Salo? A great talent and a good person off the track who never got the breaks he deserved. Good luck, Toyota. Steve Averett Charlotte, N.C.
I expect Toyota to have a much improved team. I'd still be surprised to see Salo grab a victory, however. Bill Jonesboro, Ark.
Salo'a prospects with Toyota are excellent. He is a experienced driver, and with Toyota's vast resources, if not this year next year Toyota will be very competitive. Asif Khan Teaneck, N.J.
He'll be lucky to get a point. Nice chap, but cannot drive at this level. Car and driver both need too much work. Shocking that Toyota hasn't made a better effort in their opening season. Anthony Hong Kong
Toyota has been very methodical in its testing and car development. The 2002 spec car will fare better than the 2001 testing suggests. Bringing both cars home for every race would be quite an achievement and net them top 10 finishes. If they are that consistent, they may even pick up points (remember, the awful handling BAR made it to the podium twice in 2001, albeit in the hands of Villeneuve). There will be intense competition within the team to score the best result -- Mika's best inpiration will be his ultra-competitive teammate, Allan McNish. Kim Furner Madison, Wisc. |
