LONDON -- Arrows debuted its new A23 car in testing at Valencia as it made a belated start to its preparations for the 2002 Formula One season.

Brazilian Enrique Bernoldi drove the new car in public for the first time at the Spanish circuit, but completed just 18 laps and finished 12th in the timesheets.

He was more than three seconds off the pace set by Italian Giancarlo Fisichella, who continued to familiarize himself with his new Jordan team.

Fisichella's best lap time of one minute 13.297 seconds was almost half-a-second quicker than Williams' Colombian driver Juan Pablo Montoya.

German Nick Heidfeld, who topped the times Tuesday, was third quickest of the day ahead of Williams' German driver Ralf Schumacher and his Sauber teammate Felipe Massa of Brazil.

Spain's Marc Gene, in the third Williams, was sixth quickest ahead of Briton Jenson Button's Renault, while Canadian Jacques Villeneuve and Spaniard Pedro de la Rosa were also on duty for BAR and Jaguar, respectively.

Japanese driver Takuma Sato took to the track in Jordan's new EJ12 and was 10th fastest, with BAR's Frenchman Olivier Panis 11th in the times.

Italian Jarno Trulli worked on development in Renault's new R202 and was 13th quickest ahead of Minardi's duo of Mark Webber of Australia and Malaysian Alex Yoong, who were both well off the pace.

At Mugello in Italy Ferrari test drivers Luca Badoer of Italy and Brazilian Luciano Burti were both on duty as teammates Michael Schumacher of Germany and Brazilian Rubens Barrichello unveiled the new F2002 at the team's Maranello base.

Badoer and Burti were both behind the wheel of last year's F2001 and worked on electronics and tire testing. World champion Schumacher and Barrichello will be in action Thursday.

The 2002 season gets underway on March 3 with the Australian Open in Melbourne.
