LONDON -- German Heinz-Harald Frentzen tested the Arrows A23 for the first time in Valencia after his Formula One future was finally revealed.

Frentzen was named earlier in the day as Arrows' second driver for the 2002 season, alongside Brazilian Enrique Bernoldi, before making his testing debut for the Leafield-based team.

The 34-year-old completed 18 laps of the Spanish circuit but was almost three seconds off the pace set by compatriot Nick Heidfeld in a Sauber. Frentzen posted the ninth fastest lap time.

Heidfeld set a best time of one minute and 12.413 seconds and was more than one second quicker than Williams' Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya.

Sauber's young Brazilian Felipe Massa was third fastest behind Montoya, while Williams pair Ralf Schumacher of Germany and Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia were fourth and fifth in the timesheets.

BAR's duo, Canadian Jaques Villeneuve and Frenchman Olivier Panis, were sixth and seventh and Jordan's Italian Giancarlo Fisichella finished eighth despite a major accident in the morning.

Briton Anthony Davidson was 10th quickest for BAR, while Japanese driver Takuma Sato could only set the 11th best time following an accident in his Jordan.

Renault's Fernando Alonso of Spain and Italian Jarno Trulli were also on duty as they worked on the new R202.

"I can feel the car has got great potential and I now need to get to know it better," Trulli said.

Jaguar's Spaniard Pedro de la Rosa and Minardi's Australian Mark Webber and Malaysian Alex Yoong also tested for their respective teams, but were well off the pace.

At Mugello in Italy, Ferrari's German world champion Michael Schumacher and Brazilian Rubens Barrichello were in action in last year's F2001.

The pair helped unveil the new F2002 at the team's Maranello base Wednesday, but took to the track in last year's chassis as the prepare to decide which car to start the season in.
