Saturday, February 16 Users: Yoong lucky to bring sponsors ESPN.com Here's what users had to say about Minardi's Alex Yoong and his future prospects:
I think Alex Yoong will be a great driver someday. He has the skills and the will to be a very good driver. He just needs proper guidance and definitely a lot of focus. Joanne Reyes Manila, Philippines
Yoong is on the grid simply because of the sponsorship from the Magnum Corp. from Malaysia. He is a good driver but not a great one. Time will tell. Joe Whitener St. Louis
Minardi is really scraping the bottom. I wonder how long the team will last with their hopes resting on Yoong and Webber. I predict driver changes in both cars sometime during the year or a quick dissipation for Minardi altogether ... unless Yoong comes with some serious sponsorship. I hope everyone read the "spotlight" carefully because I'm sure that's the most we'll hear about this guy or this team the rest of the season. Steve Averett Charlotte, N.C.
If anyone thinks Alex Yoong is on the grid due to talent alone, they had better wake up. If not for the money, this Gastone Mazzacanne wanna-be wouldn't be a Minardi Lollipop-man. Webber is going to look like Senna next to this Ham and Egger. Ivan Beckles London, Ontario, Canada
In his defense, I can't say I'd give any driver much of a shot to make waves behind the wheel of a Minardi. The key is definitely to just stay out of trouble and hope for races of attrition to get in the top 10. However, Yoong spins out in practice more than anyone. He needs to steady himself and his driving style. Going for broke in a Minardi only makes a bad situation worse. Patrick Heber East Lansing, Mich.
Yoong could very well prove me wrong, but I just don't think he has what it takes to drive that underpowered, underfunded car into the mid-pack. But then again, who could? The very quick Alonso was able to have some nice qualifying runs last year, but the car was never able to stay quick throughout a race. I think if Minardi can create a reliable car, they might be able to squeek out a point or two, most likely in a dry/rain race where they can gamble on tire choice. Tim Prichard Decatur, Ga. |
