Check out a short list of favorites for Sunday's San Marino Grand Prix at Imol
| | |
| | Barrichello |
Rubens Barrichello (Brazil)
Three grand prixs, three non-finishes
and obviously no points to show for to start the year; perhaps that
will change for the Brazilian driver at Imola where he finished
third on the podium last year; another third finish was in 1999,
while in 2000 he placed fourth; failed to complete his home race
at Sao Paolo for the eighth time; only career victory was recorded
at the 2000 German Grand Prix.
Jenson Button (England)
The 22-year-old finished fourth in Brazil
for his second consecutive such result for Renault; also placed in
the same spot in Malaysia; that puts him fourth in the standings
with six points; his performances in the first three races have
been considered solid by team boss Flavio Briatore who warned the
young racer over his poor showings in 2001 where he struggled to
finish and earned just two points in 17th place.
David Coulthard (Scotland)
The third place finish in Brazil was
his first points finish of the year and 51st career podium appearance;
was runner-up to Ralf Schumacher at San Marino in 2001; winner at
Imola in 1998 from the pole; Scotsman finished a distant second
to Michael Schumacher in last year's championship (123-65); won
races in Brazil and Austria last season.
Heinz-Harald Frentzen (Germany)
His first career Formula One
victory was at Imola in 1997; also earned a point last year with
a sixth place result; has not been among the notable drivers the
past couple of season; drives for Arrows this year; best career
year was in 1999 when he finished third in the points standings
behind Mika Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher.
Eddie Irvine (Northern Ireland)
Feels the Jaguar package is
improved this year and better results will come in the coming
races; started year with fourth place finish in Australia and
just missed a points place in Brazil (7th); had good results at
Imola while with Ferrari, finishing third in 1997 and fourth in
1996.
Juan Montoya (Colombia)
Appeared to be a little upset at the first
lap collision with Michael Schumacher at the Brazilian Grand Prix;
they raced for the lead position, Schumacher shut the door and Montoya
ended up clipping the back of Michael's Ferrari and having his front
wing disintegrate; the Colombian was incensed at the tactics and
vowed revenge as the two came together for the second straight grand
prix; "I thought he was a fair guy to race with but he is not. Now
I know what the rules are." he said. "I gave him room at the first
two corners, then he cuts across me. Next time I will just do the
same as him." Eventually he made his way from 20th to a fifth place
finish; he and Michael Schumacher are the only two racers to earn
points in all three grand prixs this year; the 14 points earned puts
him third behind Michael (24) and Williams teammate Ralf Schumacher
(16); did not finish his first race in San Marino last season.
Kimi Raikkonen (Finland)
His first start at Imola last year was not
what he desired; finished 20th; started 2002 strong with a third place
in Australia, but then followed that with non-finishes in Malaysia and
Brazil; replaced countryman Mika Hakkinen at McLaren Mercedes for the
2002 season; scored points in four grand prixs in his debut season last
year with Sauber.
Michael Schumacher (Germany)
Made an aggressive maneuver to block Juan Montoya
from taking the lead in Brazil that incensed the Colombian driver; the
German champion stated he felt the block was within Formula One rules;
"I moved over to the left to avoid him taking the inside, I left the
outside open for him and that's it," Schumacher said. "I don't know
what happened and I don't know what makes him unhappy. I didn't even
feel a touch."; with two wins already and a third place in three races,
he tops the championship with 24 points, eight more than younger brother
Ralf and 10 ahead of Montoya; won in San Marino in 1999 and 2000, was
second the previous two years, and also had another victory at Imola
in 1994 whule with Italian team Benetton; the San Marino event was one
of only two grand prixs he did not finish last year in his fourth world
championship.
Ralf Schumacher (Germany)
Recorded his first career Formula One victory at the
San Marino Grand Prix last year; it was a good year with other wins in
Canada and the German Grand Prix; although he started this year with a
no finish in Australia due to an accident, he followed that with a
victory in Malaysia and second to brother Michael in Brazil two weeks
ago; earned 49 points last year for a fourth place finish in the final
championship standings.
Jarno Trulli (Italy)
One of two Italian drivers in Formula One (Giancarlo
Fisichella is the other); last year he captured his first points finish
at Imola (5th) after four previous results were no better than 10th;
best career finish was second at the 1999 European Grand Prix in
Nurburgring, Germany when driving for Prost.
