Walker dies of pneumonia
Reuters

LONDON -- Former Formula One team owner Rob Walker has died of pneumonia aged 84, the autosport.com website has reported.

Walker, a member of the Walker whisky family, established a reputation as one of the great private entrants in the golden era of motor racing and enjoyed a fruitful partnership with driver Stirling Moss.

Walker entered a private team in Formula One between 1958 and 1968, after he had given up racing himself.

His partnership with Moss was his most successful and together they secured maiden victories for both Cooper and Lotus long before manufacturers owned factory teams.

Walker's team had a total of nine grand prix wins. Moss secured an historic victory in Argentina in a Walker-entered Cooper in 1958.

It was the first victory for a rear-engined car and two years later he enjoyed another famous win at Monaco, driving a Lotus.

Walker's most successful period in Formula One came to an end when Moss was forced to retire after a crash at Goodwood in 1962.

However, he celebrated one of his greatest wins when Jo Siffert drove a Lotus 49 to victory in the 1968 British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch after holding off Chris Amon's Ferrari.

Walker's team continued into the 1970s under the works Surtees banner but with the best days behind him Walker eventually pulled out of Formula One.
