MONTREAL -- Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello criticized race officials for wrecking his Canadian Grand Prix hopes by deploying the safety car.

The car was sent out on lap 14 as marshals struggled to move Jacques Villeneuve's stranded British American Racing (BAR) after it halted with an engine failure.

The Brazilian was leading at the time but the car stayed out for four laps, a situation that allowed Juan Pablo Montoya to make a pitstop in the Williams and rejoin the race without losing much time.

Barrichello then went into the pits eight laps after the safety car had been called back in.

"Basically I think there was no reason to bring it out," he said. "The car was parked.

"I don't think anybody would have run into that car. My race was pretty much done by that."

Ferrari boss Jean Todt commiserated with him after Michael Schumacher won to give the team their 150th victory since the first in 1951.

"We had adopted a more aggressive strategy with Rubens, who was on a two stop," he said. "It's a shame that the arrival of the safety car on lap 14 prevented him from getting the most out of it."
