Sunday, June 23 Collision mars teammates day again Reuters
Fisichella, starting 18th and two rows behind Japanese rookie Sato, appeared to skid under braking into the first Castrol S curve and hit the other Jordan. Both pitted and resumed the race at the back of the field, with Sato a lap down on Ferrari's early leader Rubens Barrichello. Fisichella had scored points in the three last races, a feat matched only by Ferrari's world champion Michael Schumacher and McLaren's David Coulthard. The incident was a repeat of one in Malaysia, when Sato braked too late and hit the back of Fisichella's car. The two almost came together in Monaco last month as well when the Japanese moved over to let the Italian through and lost control coming out of the tunnel.
Montoya, out again
For the third race in a row, the Williams driver failed to finish after starting on pole position. In Monaco and Canada, his car's BMW engine let him down. Montoya was running in fourth place and being harried by Coulthard's McLaren when the Scot made his move at the end of the pit straight with 27 of the 60 laps completed. Coulthard tried to overtake on the outside into the first corner and Montoya appeared to clip the curb under braking. The Williams swung around, hitting the McLaren's front right wheel. A Williams spokeswoman said Montoya was very upset but admitted it was his fault and said the car had been difficult to handle. Montoya had been level second in the championship with teammate Ralf Schumacher and the accident put paid to him reducing the 43 point lead enjoyed by Ferrari's Michael Schumacher. It also ended Coulthard's hopes of leapfrogging the Colombian into second place in the championship. The Scot had been one point behind Montoya. |
