Wednesday, July 17 Arrows ready to run in France Reuters LONDON -- The financially troubled Arrows Formula One team will have engines for Sunday's French Grand Prix after paying suppliers Cosworth by the Wednesday deadline. "The money was paid to Cosworth within the deadline and the engines have been released for this weekend," said a spokesman for Ford's Premier Performance Division, which oversees Cosworth. "All payments to Cosworth Racing are up to date and, as stated before, the terms of the agreement are confidential," Arrows said in a separate statement. "The issues we have are nothing to do with Cosworth, they are to do with one of our shareholders. We are still in discussions and, as we said yesterday, we will do all in our power to compete this weekend." Arrows is struggling to ensure its survival and almost missed the British Grand Prix at Silverstone when Cosworth demanded payment before releasing engines for the race. They raced only after an 11th hour agreement on the eve of qualifying. Jaguar boss Niki Lauda, who also oversees Cosworth, said after Silverstone that a deal had been agreed whereby Arrows boss Tom Walkinshaw had to pay for the engines on the Wednesday before each race. Walkinshaw has been negotiating since Silverstone for either a takeover or partial purchase of the team by new investors and the team's cars were sent to France only on Tuesday night. Inspection is Thursday afternoon. The team said Tuesday that its fate still hung in the balance, with new investors waiting to step in but existing shareholders yet to agree the move. Shareholders Morgan Grenfell, part of the Deutsche Bank group, secured High Court backing before Silverstone to block a proposed sale of Arrows' assets to Austrian Red Bull magnate Dieter Mateschitz. |
