MONZA, Italy -- Race stewards have demoted McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen from fifth place to sixth on the starting grid for Sunday's Italian Grand Prix after he was blamed for a qualifying collision.

Raikkonen and Japan's Takuma Sato collided late in the hour-long session when the Finn failed to move over as the Jordan driver came up behind him on a fast lap.

Both drivers were summoned by the stewards after they received a report from the race director stating that Raikkonen had caused the collision.

The stewards said they had decided to strip Raikkonen of his fastest qualifying time, a decision that moved British Jaguar driver Eddie Irvine up to an unexpected fifth place.
