MONZA, Italy -- Sauber's Brazilian Felipe Massa has made Formula One history twice in one day at the Italian Grand Prix.

The rookie driver became the first to use the HANS head and neck protection system, which becomes mandatory next season, in a race.

He was also the first to be punished under a new sanction introduced this season for those who cause an avoidable collision.

Race stewards said in a statement that he will start the next Grand Prix, in Indianapolis on September 29, 10 places back from his qualifying position.

Massa, who has been dropped by the Swiss team for next year in favor of Germany's Heinz-Harald Frentzen, collided with the Jaguar of Spaniard Pedro de la Rosa at Monza.

The Jaguar driver said Massa had done "the most inexplicable things I have seen on a race track for ages."

"He kept moving all over the place and every time I made an effort to pass him, he blocked me," added de la Rosa.

Massa in turn blamed the Spaniard in a later team statement.

"He was so slow going down to Ascari (chicane) that I put my car in the middle of the track and as far as I was concerned, I was past him. Maybe he hit the throttle again.

"The only good thing is that I became the first driver to race in F1 with the HANS safety collar and it gave me no problems all weekend."
