Pizzonia leaves good impression
Reuters

INDIANAPOLIS -- Brazilian test driver Antonio Pizzonia is good enough to shine in Formula One, team boss Frank Williams believes.

The 22-year-old, employed by Williams this year while also competing in Formula 3000, tested for Jaguar in Barcelona last week.

"He is quick enough certainly and I think a good enough racer to be in Formula One. He is quite good at overtaking," Williams told a news conference after practice for Sunday's U.S. Grand Prix.

Jaguar, who has no formal test driver at present and also has regular Eddie Irvine out of contract at the end of the season, have been trying out several youngsters as they assess their options for 2003.

The Ford-owned team's boss Niki Lauda, himself a three times world champion, said on Thursday that he was impressed by the youngster from the Amazonian city of Manaus.

"Pizzonia did a good job in testing," said the Austrian. "He came there, was very analytical in the car, was basically good test information he gave about our car, which is always good to understand where we are in the car. And he did good lap times, so it was quite impressive."

The Brazilian has shone less in Formula 3000 and Williams, whose team have already confirmed Spain's Marc Gene as their principal test driver for 2003, agreed that the results had been poorer than expected.

"He has disappointed himself in Formula 3000 and surprised us at the same time. But we rate him very highly and he should have a strong career in Formula One, there's no question about that."
