Tuesday, January 7 Updated: January 14, 3:42 PM ET Comments on Formula One drivers ESPN.com We spotlighted F1 drivers Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Nick Heidfeld. Here are your thoughts on their '02 campaigns and prospects for next season:
I expected big things from Frentzen when he secured the drive with Williams in 1997. Unfortunately he struggled for a number of seasons winning only once at Imola. Probably his best years were the early days at Jordan when he almost stole the championship from Hakkinen and Irvine. But he hasn't made much of an impact since though the equipment hasn't always been up to scratch. He should feel lucky that Sauber called. Massa in his second year, and full of potential, would have been the better choice. Frentzen will show the odd flash of talent but it wont help Sauber to leap frog Renault in the championship.
Nick Heidfeld has missed his chance. Having secured the F3000 Championship and locked into a long term contract with McLaren, Heidfeld's career has stalled. When Ron Dennis had the choice between Heidfeld and Raikkonen he picked the flying Finn. Do you think he made the right choice? I think so.
If Heidfeld doesn't blow Frentzen out of the water this year his future in F1 maybe on shaky ground.
Poor Heinz-Harald. When he entered F1 in '93 (or thereabouts) he came in regarded as the best of the Mercedes sports car trio of Karl Wendlinger, himself and a young Michael Schumacher. Now here's Schumacher completely dominating F1 with the legendary Ferrari, and Frentzen has had only one sniff of a decent team, and now he's with Sauber, still an also-ran. Frentzen may be a decent driver, but he's doomed to the middle of the pack in '03, and maybe lower than that. Sad for a guy who was very highly touted as a rookie 10 years ago.. Dennis Walker Silverdale, Wash.
Heinz-Harald Frentzen should challenge Nick Heidfeld for the top spot at Sauber in 2003. Frentzen has proven in the past that he has the ability to score points -- even win races. With Sauber, Frentzen has the equipment to get points and maybe even land on a podium. Vic Landers San Diego
Nick Heidfeld is a mid-pack driver on a mid-pack team. But if Sauber falls any further behind in 2003, Heidfeld will be hard-pressed to score any points, regardless of how well he drives. Best case scenario: Heidfeld is able to steal a couple of finishes just outside the podium. Jake Noorderhaus Nepean, Ottawa
With a new teammate (Frentzen) who actually has some experience to lend to the team, Nick Heidfeld and Sauber should be improved in 2003. Heidfeld certainly won't battle the drivers from the big three teams for the top spots in the standings, but he should be a favorite to be the best of the rest. Bill Anthony Henderson, Nev. |
