SEPANG, Malaysia -- Team by team analysis of Sunday's Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix (teams listed in 2002 championship order):

FERRARI (Rubens Barrichello 2, Michael Schumacher 6):

Barrichello was cleared to race without the mandatory HANS safety device and gave Ferrari their first podium finish of the year. Schumacher collided with Italian Jarno Trulli's Renault on the first lap and never recovered.

WILLIAMS (Ralf Schumacher 4, Juan Pablo Montoya 12):

Ralf made an amazing recovery from 17th on the grid while Montoya was caught up in the first lap incident and lost his rear wing when Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia's Jaguar hit the rear of the car. He rejoined three laps behind the leader and then his water bottle stopped working after 12 laps.

MCLAREN (Kimi Raikkonen 1, David Coulthard retired):

Raikkonen secured his long-awaited first win to take the championship lead from team mate Coulthard, who retired on lap three with an electrical problem.

RENAULT (Fernando Alonso 3, Jarno Trulli 5):

Alonso took the first podium of his career after becoming the youngest to start from pole. He was the first Spaniard in the top three since Alfonso De Portago in 1956. Trulli was hit by Schumacher and held up further by a long pitstop.

SAUBER (Nick Heidfeld 8, Heinz-Harald Frentzen 9):

Heidfeld stalled on his first stop, losing time. Frentzen could not select first gear on the grid and made a slow start. His engine also cut out on his first stop.

JORDAN (Ralph Firman 10, Giancarlo Fisichella retired):

Fisichella got lost on the starting grid and blew his launch control when the clutch overheated. Rookie Firman finished a race for the first time but was slowed by low fuel at the finish and lost a place on the last lap.

JAGUAR (Mark Webber and Antonio Pizzonia retired):

Pizzonia was involved in the first lap shunt and pitted immediately for a new nose cone. He went out with a brake problem. Webber was running eighth when he came in for fuel but a clutch problem held him up for 30 seconds. He regained eighth place before retiring to avoid engine damage.

BAR (Jenson Button 7, Jacques Villeneuve did not start):

Button lost two places on the last lap when the rear of the car locked up on the final corner. Villeneuve's gearbox was damaged on the parade lap due to an electrical problem.

MINARDI (Jos Verstappen 13, Justin Wilson retired):

Verstappen lost his rear wing on the first lap. Wilson was flown to hospital in Kuala Lumpur with a frozen arm after his HANS device trapped a nerve. He had been as high as seventh.

TOYOTA (Cristiano Da Matta 11, Olivier Panis retired):

Da Matta started with the spare car from the pitlane after a clutch problem and had to run on a full fuel load due to a lack of fuel pressure. Panis lasted 12 laps before retiring with low fuel pressure. A similar problem also occurred at the season-opening race in Australia on March 9.
