2001 Recap
The Good: McNish, 31, had thought his window of opportunity for a Formula One career had slammed shut until Toyota offered him a seat for 2002. The Scot left sports car racing in 2001 to concentrate on testing and the development of Toyota's F1 piece.

McNish has tested in the past for the likes of McLaren, Benetton and Lola, but those jobs did not translate into a full-time driving gig. His test sessions with Toyota, however, convinced the Japanese giant that he was the man for the job.

The Bad: Toyota is making its F1 debut in 2002, and McNish warns both he and the team have a large mountain to climb to respectibility.

McNish's teammate, Mika Salo, was promised a Toyota ride at the end of the 2000 season. McNish, on the other hand, had to wait for months to earn a contract offer. Toyota's chairman has made it clear that Salo is the team's top driver.

	Allan McNish helped Toyota debut its new F1 car last month in Cologne, Germany.

Key Stat: McNish enjoyed a very successful sports car career, including a win in the Le Mans 24 Hour race with Porsche in 1998.

2002 Outlook
What needs to be done: McNish and his fans shouldn't expect much in 2002. He's the No. 2 driver on a brand-new team. If he can qualify for and finish races, that's a plus. Both McNish and the team need as much track time as possible.

Prediction: Toyota will be watching its competitors from the rear of the field -- for now. The Japanese automaker is the world's largest, and it will, no doubt, spend the necessary money to compete with the big boys in the future.
