2001 Recap
The Good: Massa, 20, won this year's European Formula 3000 championship in his debut season. Then, after just five tests, was hired by Sauber to replace Kimi Raikkonen, who bolted for McLaren after enjoying a remarkable rookie campaign.

Massa, who hails from Sao Paulo and has been dogged with many comparisons to famed Brazilian hero Aryton Senna, won five Euro 3000 races and five poles in 2001. Before that, he also won the Italian Formula Renault title in 2000 and Brazilian Formula Chevrolet in 1999.

The Bad: Massa's lack of experience will surely show in 2002. In just five days of testing on the Mugello circuit in Italy, Massa realized he had much to learn -- and little time to learn it. The first time he got in the car he spun on the track four times. After that, however, he did manage to post sparkling lap times, even faster than Michael Schumacher.

While even team boss Peter Sauber admits Massa presents a "calculated risk" on the organization's behalf, Massa will enter Formula One with more success and experience under his belt than Raikkonen did before him.

Felipe Massa
Brazilian Felipe Massa knows comparisons to Aryton Senna are inevitable.

Key Stat: Massa set the best time during a three-day test at Mugello in October -- 1.25.230. The current lap record, set last year by Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello, stands at 1.22.500, just over two-and-a-half seconds quicker than Massa.

2002 Outlook
What needs to be done: After Raikkonen's eye-opening season with Sauber, much will be expected from Massa in his debut campaign. With Sauber's Ferrari engines, the youngster will be expected to score points -- and quickly. After all, Raikkonen became just the 50th Formula One driver ever to score in his debut run last year.

Prediction: It may be too much to ask for lightning to strike twice for Sauber. But, Massa has more experience in single-seat racers, and he's impressed in testing. If he does show promise, Massa may not be at Sauber for long. Italian media outlets have already reported that Ferrari may be interested ... they missed out on Raikkonen, we can't imagine they'd sit on the sidelines again.
