2001 Recap
The Good: Verstappen secured the one and only point for Arrows in 2002. The Dutchman was also highly impressive during race starts, when he regularly overtook a fistful of cars.

Verstappen would often continue to run well in the early parts of races, before being overtaken by better, more reliable cars.

  • Season Highlight: Verstappen scored his first and only point of the season with a sixth-place finish at Austria. He made a superb start to move up to seventh from 16th on the grid and was running fifth before his two-stop strategy cost him a place.

The Bad: The Arrows car was not a top performer in 2002. Reliability was an issue, too, as Verstappen retired early from six races last year.

After much speculation that Verstappen may be replaced at Arrows by German Heinz-Harald Frentzen, the rumors came to fruition Feb. 7 when it became official. Verstappen officially enters the 2002 season looking for a new ride.

  • Season Lowlight: Verstappen won few friends for crashing into race leader Juan Montoya, a rookie in his third career Formula One start, in the Brazilian Grand Prix.

    Jos Verstappen
Dutchman Jos Verstappen is out with Arrows in 2002.

Key Stat: Verstappen and his Arrows car struggled on Saturdays in 2001 with just two top-15 qualifying efforts (15th at Australia and 13th at Montreal).

    2002 Outlook
What needs to be done: Whoever is behind the Arrows wheel will probably struggle greatly, as the car will be short on performance again in 2002. Now that Verstappen is out of the driver equation, he needs to find a new ride.

Prediction: Verstappen will have a hard time finding work in F1 now that all the teams have confirmed their lineups. It will be a wait-and-see game for Verstappen.

Arrows will likely battle Minardi to avoid the basement in the constructor's standings.
