2001 Recap
The Good: The Brazilian was remarkably consistent in 2001, only retiring early from four events. While not collecting a single victory, Barrichello did pick up 10 podium finishes, including five runner-up efforts.

  • Season Highlight: At Monza, Barrichello outqualified teammate Michael Schumacher for the first time in 2001. He then looked to have the quickest car on the track during the race, too. Barrichello ended up second, after a fuel nozzle problem in the pits cost him a chance at victory.

The Bad: It's not easy to be the support driver for Schumacher, F1's all-time winningest pilot, but Barrichello was always running up front. He lost out on his bid for the second spot in the points, however, which would have given Ferrari a 1-2 sweep in the driver standings.

  • Season Lowlight: Barrichello was asked to give way to Schumacher in the final stages of the Austrian Grand Prix. Barrichello later told Autosport magazine those closing laps were the most difficult of his career.

    Rubens Barrichello
Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello ended the season with five runner-up finishes.

Key Stat: Barrichello finished just nine points behind runner-up David Coulthard in the standings.

    2002 Outlook
What needs to be done: Barrichello believes it is possible to beat Schumacher, even while being his teammate. For that to happen, however, the unlikely would need to occur -- injury or numerous mechanical problems would have to plague the champion's season.

Prediction: Barrichello will once again find himself following his teammate in qualifying and on race day. He'll likely battle Coulthard, along with Williams' duo of Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya, for the runner-up spot in 2002.
