2002 Recap
The Good: David Coulthard was one of only two non-Ferrari drivers to win in 2002. Furthermore, he was the only driver to win a race over Michael Schumacher in the 2002 Ferrari. The only other time Ferrari lost in 2002 Schumacher was driving a 2001 version of the car. Coulthard rose to the challenge thrown down by his new and very fast teammate Kimi Raikkonen, and Coulthard's experience allowed him to earn nearly twice as many points as Raikkonen.
Season Highlight: Coulthard qualified second for the Monaco Grand Prix and beat pole sitter Juan Pablo Montoya into the first corner. Coulthard held off Montoya and later Michael Schumacher, never made a single mistake, and went on to win.
The Bad: McLaren's late decision to switch to Michelin tires hampered the development of the 2002 MP4/17 chassis. Team boss Ron Dennis declined to point a finger at any one part of the package that was lacking, but many F1 insiders believed that the Mercedes V10 didn't have the horsepower of its rivals. Coulthard wasn't particularly strong in qualifying, particularly in the middle of the season, and only started from the front row once.

Key Stat: Qualifying second at Monaco. Using the superb launch control system of the McLaren, Coulthard vaulted into the lead. It's virtually impossible to overtake around the twisty Monaco streets, and once out front Coulthard controlled the race and went on to win.
2003 Outlook
What needs to be done: It's very simple: McLaren and Mercedes need to build a better car and engine -- a package capable of beating Ferrari. Coulthard is at his peak both mentally and physically, but he's going to have to dig very deep to keep the fast-maturing and fantastically fast Raikkonen at bay.
Prediction: The McLaren will be more competitive in 2003, but then so will the Williams. There should be some epic battles between these two teams, but they will still be chasing Schumacher's Ferrari.
