2002 Recap
The Good: Jenson Button was the "best of the rest" in 2002 as he finished seventh in the standings behind the six drivers from the three top teams -- Ferrari, Williams and McLaren. He didn't let his dismal 2001 season with the uncompetitive Benetton demoralize him, and he bounced back strongly in 2002. He shed his (mostly underserved) jet set image and proved to be a hard-working team player.

  • Season Highlight: Button finished in the points only once in 2001 with a solitary fifth place. He started the 2002 season off with a pair of fourth places in the grueling conditions of Malaysia and Brazil. That matched his career best finish, which was a fourth in Germany in 2000.

The Bad: While it proved to be competitive on a variety of tracks, the Renault still wasn't reliable enough. Despite outscoring teammate Jarno Trulli, Button knew from the start of the season that his job was under threat from test driver Fernando Alonso who was hovering on the sidelines. And sure enough, halfway through the season, Renault announced it would replace Button with Alonso in 2003.

Key Stat: Fourteen points. With the drivers from the top three teams hogging most of the points, it was slim pickings for the rest of the field. But Button grabbed enough points (14 compared to only two in 2001) to wind up seventh in the championship.

    2003 Outlook
What needs to be done: British American Racing Honda will be Button's third team in four years. He is going to have to settle in as quickly as possible, but it will still take about six months to get used to how the team operates. BAR director Dave Richards says that the team will no longer center around Jacques Villeneuve, but Button is still going to have to cope with Villeneuve who is notorious for out-psyching his teammates.

Prediction: With input from new technical director Geoff Willis and an improved engine from Honda, the BAR 005 should be the best car yet produced by the team. Button's easy going and friendly manner will make him popular with the crew (more so than Villeneuve), but he's going to have to fight extremely hard to beat a determined Villeneuve.

    Your Take
Will Jenson Button succeed at BAR? Or will he struggle mightily in his new ride? Here are your thoughts on Button's prospects for 2003.
