Thursday, January 15 Updated: January 22, 1:14 PM ET Juan Pablo Montoya By Dan Knutson Special to ESPN.com
The good: Juan Pablo Montoya won twice, had an incredible streak in eight consecutive races when he finished in the top three, was in contention for the World Championship until the 15th race, and finished third in the points for the second season in a row. The bad: It took nearly six races before the team got the FW25 chassis dialed in. Montoya made some crucial mistakes as he spun while running with the lead pack in Australia, Canada and Indianapolis. Mechanical failures cost him podium finishes, and maybe wins, in Austria and Japan. The team lost momentum in the final three races. Key stat: Montoya and the late Graham Hill are the only two drivers who have won two of the most prestigious races in the world -- the Monaco Grand Prix and the Indianapolis 500.
2004 outlook
What needs to be done: Get off to a really strong start over teammate Ralf Schumacher so that there is no question the team supporting Montoya's championship quest even though he is leaving for McLaren in 2005. Key change: After three years with Williams BMW, Montoya is heading to McLaren Mercedes in 2005. Prediction: Montoya will be a key contender in the World Championship battle in 2004. Did you know: He is, naturally, a huge hero in his native Colombia. Of the 40 million Colombians, it is estimated that 27 million watched him win the 2003 German Grand Prix on television.
