Thursday, January 8 Updated: January 14, 4:37 PM ET Nicolas Kiesa By Dan Knutson Special to ESPN.com
The good: He got a break in F1 when Jaguar hired Justin Wilson away from Minardi. The bad: Kiesa was thrown in at the deep end late in the season. True, Minardi is a low-key place to make one's F1 debut, but he had virtually no testing to get used to the car, and he was immediately thrust into the spotlight of grand prix weekends. Key stat: He was a classified finisher in all of his five grand prix starts, but he never cracked the top 10.
2004 outlook What needs to be done: Hope that he can land a test drive with one of the F1 teams, or keep honing his skills in F3000. Key change: After a brief stint in F1 in 2003, Kiesa will probably end up back in the F3000 series in 2004. Prediction: Kiesa proved to be a proficient but not brilliant F1 driver. That, even though he has some financial backing, is not going to be good enough to land him a ride in 2004. Did you know: After the season was over, Kiesa gave his father, himself a racer, a thrilling ride in one of the Minardi two-seater F1 cars.
