Thursday, December 11 Updated: December 16, 1:09 PM ET Rubens Barrichello By Dan Knutson Special to ESPN.com
The good: Two wins, six other podium finishes, two poles. Both victories, in England and Japan, came as the result of superb drives rather than luck. The bad: Barrichello didn't feel as comfortable in the 2003 Ferrari as in the 2002 model, and that reflected in his results. With the FIA banning team orders, Barrichello didn't have to deliberately move over to let teammate Schumacher pass, but he still had to play second fiddle to Schumi. And the worst of all, he ran out of fuel while leading at home in the Brazilian Grand Prix. Key stat: Won convincingly in the season finale in Japan and thus ensured that Schumacher clinched the championship no matter what happened to Schumacher or title contender Kimi Raikkonen.
2004 outlook What needs to be done: Barrichello's Ferrari contract expires at the end of 2004, and he has to prove to the team that they should keep him instead of replacing him with the likes of Felipe Massa in 2005.
Guarantee: No changes in the Ferrari "super team" as the drivers, technical and management hierarchy are all back in 2004. Prediction: Barrichello will put in some excellent drives in 2004 but, as always, Schumacher will rule the roost. Did you know: When he was a boy, Rubinho (his nickname that means "little Rubens") used to watch the Brazilian Grand Prix from a window at his grandmother's house that overlooked the Interlagos circuit.
