CART legend to make Indy cameo
Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS -- As ESPN's Robin Miller reported March 10, Michael Andretti, the winningest driver in CART history, will enter the Indianapolis 500 next week for the first time since 1995.

The 1991 CART champion and son of 1969 Indy winner Mario Andretti is driving this season for the new Motorola Racing team formed by Barry Green, who also owns the cars driven by Paul Tracy and Dario Franchitti at the separate Team Kool Green operation.

The team said Thursday that Andretti, Green and Speedway president Tony George would attend a news conference Tuesday at the Speedway's infield media center for an announcement about its participation in the May 27 race.

Andretti, who was fourth in the CART season-opener in Mexico two weeks ago, confirmed at that time that Green was trying to help him put together a deal to drive in the rival Indy Racing League's premier event. Most CART teams and drivers have boycotted Indianapolis since George founded the IRL as a separate series in 1996.

Ganassi Racing returned to Indy last year and won the race with driver Juan Montoya. Ganassi and Penske Racing, whose drivers have won a record 10 Indy 500s, already have said they will enter the 500 this year.

Michael Andretti has won a record 40 CART races. He also has led more laps at Indianapolis than any driver who has never won the world's richest auto race.

Ganassi this week entered four cars for rookies Nicolas Minassian and Bruno Junqueira.

Montoya left Ganassi to drive this season in Formula One. Former Ganassi teammate Jimmy Vasser left for the rival Patrick Racing in CART. In their place, Ganassi hired Junqueira and Minassian, who last season finished 1-2 in the Formula 3000 series.

Among the other early Indy entries are Team Menard cars for Greg Ray, the 1999 Indy Racing League series champion; and Treadway Racing cars for two-time winner Arie Luyendyk, who is coming out of retirement, and rookie Felipe Giaffone.

The entry deadline is April 11.
