Galles entering five cars, three drivers

INDIANAPOLIS -- Cars for former winners Al Unser Jr. and Eddie Cheever were among a flurry of entries that beat the deadline for the May 27 Indianapolis 500.

The deadline was midnight Wednesday, although entries postmarked before then will be accepted.

Galles Racing entered five cars, including two for Unser, one for rookie Didier Andre of France and two for rookie Casey Mears, nephew of former Indy winner Rick Mears.

Cheever, the only owner-driver in the Indy Racing League, entered two cars for himself and two for teammate Scott Goodyear.

Among other entries Wednesday were four cars for Walker Racing. Two of them were assigned to 20-year-old Sarah Fisher, whose second-place finish last week in Homestead, Fla., was the best by a female driver in Indy-car racing history. Fisher was 31st as a rookie at Indianapolis last year.

Also among the latest entries were cars for rookie Brandon Erwin and veterans Billy Boat and Jeret Schroeder.

Earlier entries included cars for former Indy winners Arie Luyendyk and Buddy Lazier, and CART regulars Michael Andretti, Gil de Ferran and Helio Castroneves.

The annual Rookie Orientation Program will be Friday and Saturday, with nine first-year drivers scheduled to begin the mandatory rookie tests: Andre, Castroneves, Erwin, Felipe Giaffone, Shigeaki Hattori, Jon Herb, Bruno Junqueira, Nicolas Minassian and Cory Witherill.

Castroneves was not required to participate because of his CART experience, but he decided to take part anyway because of his team's limited testing with IRL equipment.

Junqueira and Minassian, who drive for CART's Chip Ganassi Racing, need only to complete the last two phases of the rookie tests because of their previous testing at Indianapolis. Hattori, who completed the rookie program last year but did not qualify for the race, also needs to take the final two phases.

The track will open for full practice on May 6. Qualifications for the 33 starting spots will be on May 12-13 and May 20.
