The Indianapolis 500 has taken place annually at Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 1911, excluding the World War years (1917-18; 1942-45). The running of the 86th Indianapolis 500 is sanctioned by the United States Auto Club (USAC). The Indy 500 is the largest single-day sporting event in the world, with an estimated crowd of 350,000 to 400,000.
