Monday, December 17 Fans impressed by Boat's season Here's what users had to say about Billy Boat, his past season and his future prospects:
Billy turned in one of the greatest performances of 2001. It'll be tough for him (or anyone else in the league, for that matter) to top that great performance in 2002, but he remains one of the IRL's most talented drivers. I hope his team gets the kind of backing that will allow him to get the most out of his abilities. Tom Bierbaum Erie, Pa.
Eddie Cheever proved that a smart driver can succeed as his own owner in the IRL, even with a limited budget. Billy Boat has the drive to make it happen for him too. I see Billy winning a race, competing for the win in most of them, but havng some mechanical failures too, as most new teams do. Jason Scott Green Bay, Wis.
I question his decision to become a driver/owner for next season. I have seen it ruin a bunch of good drivers in several series in the past, although I admit Mr. Cheever made it work in this series.
Besides that, next to Beechler, Billy was the surprise of last season. Considering the lack of funding compared to the likes of Panther and Kelley he definitely held his own last year despite going winless. Give him time, and the wins should come as early as after Indy.
If Billy is able to do some pre-season testing, he should be very competitive, especially at the shorter and rougher tracks like Richmond and Nashville where his midget-racing experience gives him an edge. AJ LaFollette Savoy, Ill.
I think Billy Boat has the experience and ability to surprise a few people this year. It wouldn't be too surprising to see him win at Richmond or some of the other bull rings that seem to fit his midget racing background. This guy is a real racer and is a great statesman for the IRL ! Jan Perry Hicksville, Ohio
A class act from start to finish. Having spent time the last few years in lesser equipment has made him appreciate what it takes to make that equipment last and be up front when it counts. Dollar for dollar, one of the best in the business given the right opportunity. Michael Slevin, Jr. Lewisville, Texas
Billy Boat is one great driver. As the IRL explodes in media coverage and excitement over the next couple of years Billy Boat will definitely be a part of it. Look for a run to become the 2002 IRL champion and to show the Penske boys what the IRL is really about. Matt Troy, Mich.
My family has been a BB fan since our first race at Texas! We have had the opportunity to meet Billy several times at TMS. He does more with less than anyone in the IRL. I look for Billy to improve on his 4th place in '02. We will be pulling for Billy! Thomas H. Keller Oklahoma City, Okla.
Boat needs more consistency, but he showed great leadership with steady improvement throughout the season. But the competition will become more intense as the IRL has finally arrived as the only domestic series that can be taken seriously in the face of NASCAR. Mark Dill Cary, N.C.
Billy Boat is a consistent runner who should do very well with the combination he have put together for the 2002 season. Getting things organized early will help him. He did remarkably well last season with an underfunded team and no testing to speak of.
He is one of the most talented drivers I've seen in recent years. The thing that most impresses me is that he rarely gets brave and drives over his head. He will contend in every race and be a contender for the championship.
Double B has plenty of talent and not just driving. He should do well in 2002 and has as good a shot at the "ring" as anyone.
His year got better with experience in the new car last year. The finishes indicate that time with the new surroundings was benefical to the team and 2002 could be his year!
Billy Boat quietly put on one of the best performances for all teams in 2001 given his budget and timeframe he and the CURB team had to work within. I think that he and CURB will have a tremendous 2002 season now that he has the groundwork laid for the management of the team and the full backing of his sponsors. Luckily, his primary sponsor, Mike Curb, knows open wheel racing and will be able to give the team support both in money and knowledge. Go CURB Records Racing and here's to a great '02. David Bixby Nashville, Tenn.
I think he will find Victory Lane, but, I think it is too early to predict the points standings until the first couple of races. That's not to say that I would not love to see him contend for the title, but with Penske coming in I think it is real hard to predict any outcome till the playing field is established after the start of the season. Dave Carvin Lumberton, N.J.
He has the potential, and I think we will see him again in Victory Lane during the 2002 season. There are other teams that are also getting stronger and will make this coming season very exciting. I don't see him improving on his fourth place finish in the IRL, but I figure we he will be a top ten. Aaron Voelker Westfield, Ind. |
