Fans chime in on Cheever

Here's what users had to say about Eddie Cheever Jr., his past season and his future prospects:

I think Cheever can be competitive for several more years. I think he should seriously consider looking at Mark Dismore as a teammate. After getting screwed at Kelly Racing, Cheever needs to swoop in and pick up Dismore. He is a proven winner, he just needs good equipment and Cheever and give that much to him. Good luck this year, Eddie! See ya at Indy.

I think Eddie Cheever will not only outrace Father Time, but will have a strong season in the IRL, dominating a few races. Some may call him old, I call him experienced. I'd like to see Buddy Rice or another "new" driver be his teammate, although Jeff Ward would work, too.

Regardless, Eddie needs to keep talking the talk. Waiting to see what he says is one of the joys of watching the IRL!

Eddie the constant "underaCheever." Too bad his brain isn't as big as his mouth. Not only did we have to watch him make some of the stupidest moves in racing this year, we had to listen to his commentary during the USGP. Time for him to hang it up and go back to Europe.

Even though Eddie Cheever seems to be well past the prime of most open wheel drivers, Eddie still can compete with the much younger guys like Sam Hornish and Greg Ray. He was very strong in 2001, but a couple of questionable crashes and some mechanical failures dropped him from a championship contender to eighth in the standings. He can still go hard, he just has to keep from going hard into the wall in 2002.

Cheever is in the best position of his career. If he gets help on the business end and can focus more on driving the race car, he's capable of two to four wins and a top-3 finish.

He should pick Jeff Ward or Mark Dismore as his other driver. Both are fast, smart, have a lot of Indy car experience and will work for cheap if they believe the cars are competitive.

Ron Sutton
Sacramento, Calif.

Cheever never won in F1 or in CART, and only when he finds a talent pool as shallow as the IRL does he win and proclaim it as the best series ever. This guy is a cancer to any series he runs in. Next year he'll whine and howl about how the IRL is corrupt with the inclusion of Penske in the series. For 2003? NASCAR trucks -- just where he belongs.

Great job on landing Red Bull. Can't wait to see the paint scheme. As far as a driver I strongly believe it should be a young American that you can bring up and take under your wing. I hope Cheever chooses Buddy Rice. I've followed his career and he's one hell of a racer. Good luck this year and please pick an American.

2002 in the IRL will be a shootout between team Cheever and Panther Racing. Both ran well at the end of the year and are on a high to continue.

Cheever is a great ambassador for his sport. He is capable of beating any driver on any given weekend and just needs to show more consistency in his finishes and the title is his. Go Eddie!
