Wednesday, May 15 Brack qualified 21st for Indy By Kenny Brack Special to ESPN.com
It was a disappointing qualifying day for us on Saturday. The car had been pretty fast all week long leading up to qualifying. We were usually among the top ten or top five of the speed chart. When we made our first qualifying attempt, the car lost power on my warmup lap and we waved off the attempt. As it turned out, we had a fuel injector problem in one of the cylinders. So then we decided to qualify the backup car. When I got up to speed on my warmup lap, the car was incredibly loose in the corners. You don't want that here at Indianapolis when you're doing 230 mph. We waved off that qualifying lap also. The Team Target guys fixed the engine problem in the primary car and we decided to try and qualify that car again. Rain had been in the area all day, so we wanted to get out there and get a time on the board. When I hit the track, again the car was very loose, but we wanted to get the car in the field. My speeds were not very good and we were way off of where we qualified, but we took the speed to get in the show. It's disappointing that we didn't qualify better, but like I've talked about before, it's about the race. It's a very long race and I'm confident that we can contend for the victory in the last 50 miles. If you can put yourself in a position to win the race, that's all you can do.
I just returned from testing up in Milwaukee. We took out the CART car for a day of testing up there in preparation for the race next month. It was really cold up there but at least it wasn't raining. Everything went very well. The Target Toyota was pretty good. It was hard to tell where we are in relation to everybody else. We put up some good times, but you never know. The weather conditions and track conditions vary from day to day, but all in all, it was a productive test. Today, we came back to Indy to test the 500 car. We have a lot of work to do here this week on race setup. We need to have a consistent race car to last the 500 miles. Unfortunately, we blew an engine just a few laps into today's practice session. We had to do an engine change and that cost us a lot of track time. The weather forecast is for rain (what else is new) for the next few days, so the guys quickly changed the engine and we got back on the track this afternoon. My Team Target crew is pretty awesome. Not only did they change the engine but they also won the pit stop competition qualifier this morning. Now the guys will have a chance to win some money next Thursday on Carb Day. We're hoping to win a lot more on race day. It's been great being a part of this great event once again. It's a long month, but all of the time is well worth it. Now that I am living here in Indy, I get to sleep in my own bed every night and all of the comforts of home. Speaking of home, I'm going to go home now and get some rest before we hit the track again tomorrow. I'll talk to you next week! Kenny Brack, the driver of the No. 12 Lola for Target/Chip Ganassi Racing, is providing a diary to ESPN.com throughout the CART season. |
