2002 recap
The good: Started fifth, ran up front all evening and finally snatched the lead with 11 laps left and held off Gil de Ferran at Nashville for his initial Indy-car victory. Also finished third at Madison, Ill. and fourth in the Indy 500 after starting 26th.
Season highlight: Until a late caution gave everyone else what amounted to a free pit stop, Barron had the Indy 500 in the bag because he didn't have to stop again and was going to take over first place when everyone pitted under green.
The bad: Nothing to speak of -- except for him being out of a ride.
| |
| Barron rocked the IRL with his win at Nashville. |
Key stat: Finished 14 of the 15 races.
2003 outlook
This talented 32-year-old Californian nearly won in CART with a low-budget operation and pulled that off last year in the IRL with Larry Blair's team. But Blair has closed the doors and Barron is shopping either open-wheel series for a job.
Prediction: If CART doesn't find its '97 Toyota Atlantic champ a ride, he'll wind up an Indy 500-only driver.
