Friday, June 8 Sore ribs keep Jarrett on sidelines ESPN.com news services BROOKLYN, Mich. -- Dale Jarrett will not compete in Saturday's IROC event at Michigan International Speedway due to his injured ribs. Jarrett, who won the season-opening IROC race at Daytona International Speedway, will be replaced by veteran driver Dave Marcis. Jarrett, a former NASCAR Winston Cup Series champion, injured his ribs in a qualifying accident at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., on May 18. He did manage to complete each of the last two Winston Cup events, at Concord and Dover, Del., despite some discomfort. Jarrett said he, car owner Robert Yates and the rest of his team discussed the situation this week and decided against running the IROC event. "We're after a championship this year," Jarrett said. "That's not saying anything was going to happen in the IROC car, but these guys work extremely hard for me week in and week out. "I'm usually pretty sore; I have been the last two weeks after getting out of the car. And even though this was only a 100-mile race, I didn't feel like it was the right thing to do when we're trying to win a Winston Cup championship." Jarrett is currently leading the Winston Cup points. Besides being a longtime NASCAR veteran, Marcis works with IROC in preparing the Pontiacs for each event. Scott Goodyear will also miss the IROC race at Michigan. The IRL veteran fractured his back in an early-race wreck at Indianapolis. Goodyear will be replaced by two-time IROC champion and fellow IRL competitor Al Unser Jr. CART champion Gil de Ferran was scheduled to compete in IROC this year, too. But a pair of injuries suffered in crashes during off-season testing took him out of the action. He was replaced by NASCAR star Tony Stewart before the start of the season. |
