Etchells: America needs swift reaction

Normally, I would be writing a column about this weekend's race in Reading, Pa., and what Etchells Racing was doing to prepare for it. However, that obviously takes a back seat in light of Tuesday's dramatic and tragic events in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.

To most of us, the previous "day of infamy," the attack on Pearl Harbor, is something we either read about in history books or heard stories about from our parents and grandparents.

But now, our generation is unfortunately being forced to endure our own horrible attack. Like many of you, I've spent the last two days riveted to the news on radio, TV and the internet, following every development. To say the least, I was outraged by this cowardly act perpetrated by people who, quite frankly, don't deserve to take another breath.

I believe our country's path of action is clear, and it must be swift and decisive. We must seek out those responsible for this heinous crime and wipe them, and those who support them, out.

That is the only way to answer such an attack. The challenge is there for President Bush and our government. Let me put it this way, I'm not just behind them as they chase these murderers, I'm pushing them, because I really won't feel much like racing until justice is served.

Having said that, let me join with the many people across the country and the world in expressing my sympathies to all those affected. It's also heartening to see how many people have stepped forward trying to help. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved. To any of you who want to help, go out and donate blood, or simply pray.

I would like to take this opportunity to applaud the NHRA for their swift decision to postpone this weekend's race. For many reasons, it was the right thing to do. Obviously, the routes of travel across the country have been seriously altered, with planes across the country still grounded as I write this. Under these circumstances, it would have been very difficult to get all the drivers, crew chiefs and various support personnel (including NHRA officials) to Reading. By making the call early Tuesday, inconveniences were kept to a minimum.

In a very short time, we will get back to racing, giving you fans the great show you have come to expect from us. But for now, our focus needs to remain on things of greater importance.
