Comments on NHRA drivers

We spotlighted NHRA drivers Gary Densham and Whit Bazemore. Here are your thoughts on their '02 campaigns and prospects for next season:

I think it was great when Force hired the veteran Densham to drive the third car instead of a "young gun." Densham was instrumental in helping Force when he was first starting out in Funny Car so in a way he was repaying an old debt. It goes to show that long-time independents like Densham can run with the best of 'em when they have the proper backing. He would doubtless be doing better if that team was not used as the test car so much, but that is their role in the Force/Coil operation. If they weren't testing during the season Force wouldn't continue to dominate.

If Whit Bazemore would worry less about beating John Force and more about driving his OWN race car, he would be a much more competitive Funny Car driver.

As for Densham, I am so happy to see him doing so well. Here is a guy that paid his dues. John Force never forgets where he came from, and I am happy to see that he never forgot about Gary. I hope he has many more wins for Force Racing.

2002 was a good year for Whit, but 2003 with Dodge and a new teammate -- it's time to take the top spot away from John Force. Good luck. See you in Cancun in March!

Grand Rapids, Mich.

Densham was my auto shop teacher at Gahr High School and he knows a lot. Now that he's not a teacher and he is connected with John Force -- No. 1 in Funny Car racing -- he should do pretty damn good. Go MR. Densham!

Whit needs to bounce back and prove that his second-place finish in 2001 wasn't a fluke. With an improved team and new teammate, he might be able to challenge Force in points. But if he again suffers silly DNQs and early round losses, he'll drop in the standings faster than his Funny Car moves down the quarter mile.

My 13-year-old kid could probably win in a John Force machine. Densham needs to retire and let a deserving young driver take his place. Sure, it's nice to see him have some success later in his career, but last year would have been a good swan song. Call it a wrap, already.

Bazemore, on the other hand, needs to get his head out of you know where and win the damn title already.
