2002 recap
The good: It was a tale of two seasons. Coughlin's first half of the year was mediocre at best. From Madison on, he was next to unbeatable and made what had been a class emphasizing parity into a one-man show.

Season highlight: Winning the fall Las Vegas race, his fourth victory in a row and clinching his second career Pro Stock championship by beating then-reigning champion, Warren Johnson in the final ... on a holeshot.

The bad: Had to deal with repeated allegations by competitors of questionable rules interpretations regarding fuel and ignition. His "quick stage" tactics at Indy didn't win him many friends among his peers, either.

Season lowlight: Suffered two DNQs, one to begin the year in Pomona, Calif., and another at the spring Joliet, Ill., race.

2003 outlook
What needs to be done: Despite a family-oriented operation, crew turnover, primarily in the engine shop, needs to be stabilized. Angelo Vigil, co-engine builder with Nick Ferri, has returned home to run his family's machine shop business. After surviving the departure of Richard Maskin in 2001, the team now needs to solidify their motor program personnel.

Prediction: Coughlin could easily win another championship in '03. To go winless in the year's first 11 races and then win the 2002 title by 211 points shows just how good the Jeg's team is.
